License
Business Source License 1.1
The source is open, but this is not open source. Here is what that means in practice, without legal fog.
What you may do
Anything, including commercial use inside your organisation: index your work code, run it on a server, change it for your own tasks. No extra payment is required for that.
What you may not do
Offer the product or a derivative to third parties as a hosted or managed service whose main value is RAGRAF functionality. That case needs a commercial licence.
When it becomes Apache-2.0
Four years after a version is released it moves to Apache-2.0. This is written in the licence parameters, not promised in prose.
Why not call it open source
OSI does not approve BSL, so the correct words are source-available. GitHub shows the Other badge, which is expected.
Paid licence levels
There are two paid levels: Pro and Enterprise. Both live in one closed delivery and are opened by a signed licence file: nothing is installed when the level changes. Community is the free level under BUSL 1.1.
Frequent questions
- May I use it at work?
- Yes. Internal use, including the commercial activity of your organisation, is allowed by the licence additional use grant.
- May I fork it and drop the branding?
- The code is open, so a fork is possible. Selling a fork as a service is not: the terms are the same as for the original project.
- What happens to my code?
- The index lives in the .ragraf directory inside your project and nothing leaves your machine. RAGRAF does not send code to the licensor servers.
- Can I move from Pro to Enterprise?
- Yes, and no installation is needed: the licensor issues an Enterprise-level file and the capabilities open in the same delivery. Going back to a smaller level at renewal needs no installation either.
